Friday devotions ~ Psalm 47

When you have a bunch of someones striking their hands together you have a loud sound. When those someones are doing that in unison (somewhat) for a unified reason, then you have an applause. And what is an applause other than a bunch of people, in unison, showing how much they appreciate what someone(s) has done. Hmmm, strange how much this sounds like worship. After reading this, you may never look at an applause in the same way again. Sorry, well, not really actually, because it is what it is. When we applaud someone we are giving them our attention and showing them how much we value what they just did, and that is what the psalmist is doing here.

Clap your hands, all peoples! Shout to God with loud songs of joy!” (vs 1)

And what is the reason for applause”
~ He is a great King over all the earth.
~ He has subdued peoples and nations.
~ He chose our heritage for us.
~ He reigns over the nations.
~ He sits on His holy throne.
~ The shields of earth belong to God.
~ He is highly exalted.

And when I think about all that God has done, maybe we should be applauding more often, in worship perhaps. Can you imagine hearing the Word of God read and then people bursting into applause and cheering, not because the person did such a great job but rather because it is the Word of God? How about after the sermon? Yes, I know, applauding in worship would be weird and it would look like we were praising people and not God. But maybe we need to applaud God more. The next time you notice an amazing God moment, stop and acknowledge God, and if you are so moved, applaud. I can see it now. You are driving home some evening and you see a beautiful sunset. You pull over to the side of the road. You get out and applaud. Yup, I can see it, because, well, God is worthy.

1 Clap your hands, all peoples! Shout to God with loud songs of joy!
2 For the LORD, the Most High, is to be feared, a great king over all the earth.

LET US PRAY: Holy and awesome God, I applaud You. I clap my hands and sing. I raise my voice and glorify You, for You are indeed a great God, worthy of all praise. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

My Amazing God

Your eye is upon me O God
As You reign on high.
Never distant
Never silent
On You I can always rely.

You hear my cries all day and night
Not turning a deaf ear.
Always listening
Always caring
I love that You are always near.

Your grace receives this sin-filled life
Washing me white as snow.
Always forgiving
Always restoring
Through Jesus You’ll never let me go.

Praise will always be lifted high
Raising my hands to You.
Always worshipping
Always glorifying
For to You all honor is due.

Morning Prayer ~

Father God,
For each beat of my heart,
For each breath I do take,
For each blink of my eyes,
I give You thanks.
For this world You did make,
For this life You sustain,
For my hope that You are,
I give You praise,
For the love You have showed,
For my sins forgiven,
For my hope that’s secured,
I give You glory.

For many reasons, Lord…

I worship You.

My King

As I survey our current political scene, I need to remind myself over and over again that God is in control. No matter who holds elected office, God’s plans will not be thwarted. Yes, Satan is running wild, deceiving and leading many away but he is not king. There is only one King and He reigns forever. Let the politicians – the kings of this world – fight it out, but you, let’s praise our Father and King…

Hear my praise as i rise this morn,
oh God my Father and King.
You are
Creator,
Sustainer,
and Redeemer of my soul.
You are the One who i adore.
There is none other worthy of praise,
for You are the One who reigns.
The kings of this world vie for position,
striving for their honor to be conveyed.
But i’m not going to follow the false kings,
them i refuse to raise up.
They lead for their glory and not for You.
Their praise i refuse to sing.
For You are my King who forever reigns.
It’s Your praises that i want to proclaim.
You and You alone are worthy, oh God,
For in the end, You are the King who remains.
So receive my praise as i rise this morn,
Your mighty acts are to numerous to name.
You have saved me through Jesus Christ my Lord,
And through him i’ve been reborn.

Praying the Psalms ~ The List

Let’s keep the list going. Can you add to it?

“Praise the Lord! Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! Who can utter the mighty deeds of the Lord, or declare all his praise?” [Psalms 106:1‭-‬2 ESV]

Who can utter Your mighty deeds, Oh Lord?
Who can declare all your praise?
I will certainly try but my list will be far from complete.
For Your deeds are numerous and Your faithfulness unending.
Your love endures forever and Your might is unmatched.
You created all that I can and can not see.
Your creation is a thing of beauty.
Your wonders never cease.
You formed me from within my mother’s womb – I came forth from You.
You breathed life into me.
You declared all life to be precious.
Though a sinner You gave me Jesus.
Though a sinner You gave me Your Spirit.
Thus, I will live with You.
You raise up the lowly.
You humble the proud.
Hand in hand, we will stand before You in worship.
You have defeated all Your enemies.
You have subdued them all.
You have chased away my fear.
Oh God,
You are worthy of my worship.
You are worthy of all honor.
You are my God.
You are always with me – never have You departed.
You are always true – never have You been deceptive.
You are always holy – never to be corrupted.
You are.
Oh Lord, this is but a minuscule list – so much more can be said.
And so I will continue to praise and give You thanks, for Your steadfast love endures forever and ever.
Amen.
