Spam comments

Today I received my second spam comment in the last couple days.  To date that makes three in the last two months.  I don’t like that trend so I have made some changes.  I have activated CAPTCHA which requires people to "pass a test" to prove they are not a computer leaving messages.  Basically you will need to enter some letters that you see on the comment screen.  I hope this does not become an inconvenience but I do want to nip this spam thing in the bud before it gets out of hand.

Has anyone else seen any spam comments recently?

  1. Ok, I’ll be the guinny pig and try it out, only I can’t spell that word.

To my knowledge, I’ve never had spam on my blogs.

  2. Yup, I’ve had two spam comments in the past two days or so. They were fairly benign comments, but linked to websites I’d rather not visit . . .

  3. The comments left for me were basically nonsense. The website names looked questionable so I stayed away. Hopefully this spam will stop.

  4. Spam comments??? Oh brother! I get anywhere between a dozen and a hundred a day! Fortunately, WordPress.com uses Askimet spam protection which catches almost all of them. Any strays are caught in moderation long enough for me to “teach” askimet that it was spam. This also keeps the occasional ruderator at bay…

BTW, thank you for linking to me. I just noticed that. I will reciprocate ASAP!

  5. We have a new spam blocking system at work, but I still get at least 20-30 a day. Since they are titled as spam by our program, I can just delete it right away. It is still a pain. Thanks for the idea. I will pass it along.
On another note, check with Connie about your schedule for fall. If it is okay, we would like to come for a visit. Meara is very excited about the idea.

    Your sis.

  6. Spam comments ARE an “occupational hazard” of being a blogger. I know TypePad and other blogging software are working hard to stop spam or at least minimize it. In the mean time I am going to try to not let spammers distract me.

    Thanks for the comments.

  7. I don’t use a captcha, and I only get spam comments occassionally. If they start to proliferate (say, consistently a couple a week) I will add a captcha, but until then I just delete them as they pop up. I have noticed that they occassionally come in spurts; none for weeks, then two or three in a couple of days.
