Wouldn’t it be nice if people got as excited about the Bible as they do about the release of a Harry Potter book?
Wouldn’t it be great if people would camp outside the local Christian book store to wait for the newest release of the latest study Bible?
Wouldn’t it be awesome if people would go out and spill the beans about the Bible’s story causing people to still rush out to get their copy?
Wouldn’t it be nice if people would discuss the implications of Jesus’ death (and resurrection) for us rather than wondering if Harry Potter (a fictional character) is going to die and what that is going to mean for fans?
Wouldn’t it be nice if the world really understood what is truly important in life?
Wouldn’t it be nice…
And wouldn’t it be nice if people were as willing to make an impulse offering to God as they were to make an impulse buy? And if we were as excited to contemplate Jesus’ coming again as we are to know whether there will really be another sequel in Harry’s saga. ( which BTW I read) Wouldn’t it be nice.. I know God would agree.
I like your additions to the “wouldn’t it be nice” list. I know there are faithful Christians who read Harry Potter so I hope I did not offend you.
And I also agree that “God would agree”. Thank you for your comment.
Are there any other “wouldn’t it be nice” additions?
yeah, and wouldn’t it even be nice if people read the Bible as much as they read all the other religious books out there.
This post is a real eye opener. I don’t think anyone should be offended as it is true. A radio show I listen to in the morning was threatening (in a fun way) to read the last page of Harry Potter as the main DJ received an early addition. People were calling in very upset at the idea that someone would do this. It is just a book. The Bible is our life and I don’t see people getting as excited about that. Wouldn’t it be nice if people could be as excited to talk about the Bible as they are about Harry Potter.
On another note, we signed up Meara for Sunday School and she is super excited about that.
Take care.
Your sis.
yes, Eric, this was a really thought-provoking post. It would be cool to see a lot of different answers to the question you pose…wouldn’t it be nice if people were reading the bible with the same kind of anticipation as they read the latest best-seller? (do you know this is why Eugene Peterson wrote The Message? He wanted the bible to be as exciting to the people in his church as it is to him.
Diane — I did not know that about Eugene Peterson, but that makes sense. I wonder…did it work for his congregation? Did they get excited about the Bible?
Julie — Connie and I were at Sam’s club with Matt and Mary (for everyone else, Mary is my wife’s sister). As we came in there was a huge Harry Potter display. Matt grab a book and started reading the last couple pages. I had to laugh.
I am also glad that Meara is excited about Sunday school. Continue to encourage her and ask her questions after class. Let her teach you about what she is learning. We learn more when WE teach.
